Reflection of Unit 2

This is the second unit about pop culture. We read textbook, wrote essay, listened Mixer, had speech and watched movies. It`s a really good week. First of all, we read guide: Introduction to Students. It`s from our textbook and I knew the definition of popular culture. Also, I got pop culture was made up of objects, people, events, and places. After I read the content and checked the website, I knew objects were like rap songs and TV shows; People was like Harry potter; Events was like the Super Bowl and places were like shopping malls and Hollywood. Aha! That`s very interesting, right? Secondly, we finished a mini fad report from www.crazyfads.com. It`s a special website which told me the popular things from different decades. For example, ant farm was famous in the 1950s. People liked to take a real ants’ farm in a glass framed box and they said it was very funny. Thirdly, we thought about stars, such as movie stars, sports stars, and TV shows stars. Also, our teacher gave us different websites to show what makes a star. She gave us 5 example include Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and etc. Besides that, we thought about our pop stars. Definitely, my pop star is Marlon Brando. I made a presentation of him and had a speech. After that, I knew Marlon Brando was not only an America actor, but also a film director. He won twice of Academy Award for playing. And he was called the most important people of the century. What`s more, we prepared team work and my part is describe the fad movie, technology as well as sports in the 2000s. Our group made on prezi.com. Fourthly, we sought many different resources about pop culture students. I went to blackboard and found 3 folders. In addition, I watched “Major Theorists”, “Media Theory Sites” and I also wrote the questions from paper. Moreover, I watched 9 minutes video and wrote some notes. Then, I finished team portfolio and review midterm. I found them from blackboard. Finally, we listened a radio about how to make a conversation. It`s included how to start, how to continue and how to end the conversation. In addition, we watched a famous biographical film called Ray and wrote a review. I did not know that blog was so interesting before and I put my movie review record on my blog. It`s a interesting unit which attracted my eyes. The special thing was that I never ever felt nervous when I had a speech. That`s a good news, right? I became more confident than before and I believe I will be more and better in the future.

Marlon Brando was born in April3,1924 and passed by July1,2004.He is not only an America actor, but also a film director.Brando was also an activist,supporting many causes, African-American Civil Rights Movement and various American Indian Movements. He was born in Omaha,Nebraska.He was called Hollywood bad guy because he was a buckeed and had 12 children. His repreaentative works are :The Golden Father","On The Waterfront",and "A Streetcar Named Desire".Brando started popular for recreating the role of Stantly Kowalski in the film "A Streetcar Named Desire".He won twice of Academy Award for Best Actor for a leading Role in 1954 and 1972. He was called the most important people of the century.And he also was the greatest and influential actors. Besides that, he also experienced the failture. He was in box office decline from 1963 to 1971.He made 5 movies but they all flopped.However, he never gave up.That`s why I chose him.I admire his confident and did not abandon. He was so love his job and even his undertaking was unsuccessful, he never acted bad role.

Unit Reflection

      This unit we learn more about culture. It`s a very interesting part in our class because we all from different country.

      

First of all, I read three main points. One is Introduction to Culture. But do you know what culture is? Culture is all around us. Your living, your studying, and your playing can not leave it. By dictionary I knew culture is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. After I read the article, I got a special word called culture shock. I researched a variety of resources. The meaning is the reaction one faces when confronted with a new cultural environment. But what caused that? How about the symptoms? I really wanted to get the idea. So I checked website and I knew when people have to operate within an entirely different cultural or solid environment, they may feel homesickness, boredom, withdrawal, sleeping and eating too much. We cannot easy to describe how to overcome it. However, to learn the local language, the rules of social conduct, and history of your host country is a good way to overcome it. One is worksheet: Define American. I read the page 43 of our textbook- Mirror on America. I knew biological and cultural are the factors that influence people`s self-image. The third one is Home at Last. It`s on page 74. Actually it`s a little difficult for me. Because there are many difficult words that I need to check the dictionary. I read more than three times and then I can answer the questions.

       Secondly, I think about the worksheet-Iceberg. I drew a picture of iceberg and showed three different parts. Two parts above the sea called technical and formal, one under the sea called deep or in formal culture. The rule of technical culture is reason for the rules can be explained. The rules of formal culture is cannot be explained. Actually, the percent of deep culture is 90% and the rules are not known.

       Thirdly, I made a new blog. It`s a convenient way to show and collect the information. Also, I used many different kind of pictures to finish my Cultural Identity Poster. I put on our map, flag, traditional food-dumpling and hot pot, clothes, architecture and festival. Because “traditional” is a very special word in my country which shows in our long history. Then I created a Voki character and recorded my voice. I changed her appearance and clothes which is very interesting.

       Finally, we listened a special sad song and filled in words. This is a famous band which called U2. And we also saw MV about two lovers.

       In conclusion, we studied more in this unit. We listened the song, created blog and voki, put on poster and read many different information about culture. What is more, it`s interesting for me.
